The purple 50 Kwacha pairs Kenneth Kaunda and the fish eagle with Lusaka’s Freedom Statue and a modern building on the reverse.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

Purple ornament places a fish eagle at left and President Kenneth Kaunda's portrait at right, with the Zambian coat of arms and denomination centered beneath the Bank of Zambia title. Flowers and layered guilloche patterns fill the background. Large corner numerals and multicolored geometric panels enclose the principal imagery in a formal horizontal frame.

Reverse

The Freedom Statue in Lusaka rises at left beside a low modern building that extends across the center and right of the reverse. Steps and landscaped foreground lines lead toward the architecture, while denomination numerals anchor the corners and lower band. Purple geometric borders and a pale sky keep the statue and building clearly separated.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, P-28 was introduced in 1986 as the 50 Kwacha denomination of the established Kaunda series and is listed with Leonard S. Chivuno’s signature and prefixes 1/F–60/F. Unlike the lower values, no second regular signature variety is catalogued for this type.
