The Story of the Colombian Peso
The Peso emerged in the 19th century as Colombia moved beyond Spanish colonial systems toward a unified national economy. Across the 20th century, it accompanied cycles of coffee-driven growth, political transformation and institutional reform. Unlike many Latin American currencies, it evolved without repeated radical redenominations, maintaining continuity through gradual adaptation. In the modern era, the Peso reflects a diversified economy and a central bank focused on long-term monetary stability.
Design & Symbolism
The visual identity of the Colombian Peso reached a defining moment with the 2016 “Nueva Familia” series. These banknotes present a distinctive compositional concept: horizontal obverses paired with striking vertical reverses. Portraits include figures such as Gabriel García Márquez, Débora Arango and President Alfonso López Michelsen, each linked to landscapes that deepen their narrative context. Reverse designs feature some of Colombia’s most extraordinary environments, including Caño Cristales—the “river of five colors”—and the archaeological site of Ciudad Perdida. Printed on 100% cotton paper, the series integrates advanced security through watermark portraits, motion security threads and refined intaglio printing. A notable typographic shift replaces long numerical forms with simplified denominations such as “50 MIL PESOS,” subtly anticipating potential future monetary reform.
For collectors
For collectors, the Colombian Peso offers both artistic innovation and historical depth. The 2016 series stands out for its vertical reverses and cohesive cultural storytelling, making complete sets highly desirable. Earlier issues remain equally important: the 1992 10,000 Pesos note featuring an Emberá woman is widely regarded as one of the most visually compelling banknotes in Latin America. Collectors also explore transitional designs between series, signature varieties and condition-sensitive notes, positioning Colombia as a rich and evolving field within world paper money collecting.
Landscape, literature and identity converge in the Colombian peso through structured modern design.
