The Story of the Comorian Franc

The Franc developed within the monetary orbit of French Indian Ocean territories, particularly Madagascar, before becoming fully distinct in 1979 following independence. Anchored through a monetary cooperation agreement with France and later pegged to the Euro, it provided essential stability for an island economy shaped by agriculture, trade and migration. This continuity allowed the Comorian Franc to evolve with institutional confidence while preserving strong historical ties to its regional past.

Design & Symbolism

The visual identity of the Comorian Franc is anchored in both nature and spiritual heritage. Among its most iconic motifs is the Coelacanth—the prehistoric “living fossil” fish depicted on the 1000 Franc note—an extraordinary species found in Comorian waters and a defining national symbol. Banknotes also feature Islamic architectural elements, maritime culture and tropical ecosystems, rendered in luminous, finely balanced compositions. Earlier issues include the portrait of Sultan Al-Said Ali bin Al-Said Omar, linking the currency to the archipelago’s royal past. Produced with the technical expertise of Banque de France, the notes exhibit refined intaglio printing, intricate microprinting inspired by traditional kandzu patterns and one of the most vibrant color palettes in African currency design.

For collectors

For collectors, the Comorian Franc holds a distinguished place in world numismatics. The 2006 1000 Franc note featuring the Coelacanth gained global recognition by winning the IBNS “Banknote of the Year” award, making it one of the most sought-after modern African banknotes. Collectors also pursue the scarce 1960–1970 transitional issues tied to Madagascar, as well as early independence series bearing royal iconography. Low circulation volumes, rich artistic execution and strong thematic identity position the Comorian Franc as a refined and highly desirable niche within Indian Ocean and African collections.

An oceanic crossroads shapes the Comorian franc, where isolation and exchange meet in visual form.
