The Story of the Estonian Kroon
Introduced in 1992, the kroon replaced the Soviet ruble in what became the first successful monetary reform among former Soviet states. Its stability was secured through a strict currency board system, pegged to the German Deutsche Mark at 7.8 krooni to 1 DEM, establishing immediate credibility and economic discipline. Early issues were printed by the United States Banknote Company, reflecting initial Western alignment, before production transitioned to De La Rue, reinforcing technical refinement. The kroon remained in circulation until Estonia adopted the euro in 2011.
Design & Symbolism
The series forms a unified artistic composition created by Vladimir Taiger, giving Estonian banknotes a rare coherence across all denominations. Portraits of key cultural figures—including Lydia Koidula, Carl Robert Jakobson and A. H. Tammsaare—are paired with precise architectural and landscape motifs such as Toompea Castle and Baltic coastal forms. The designs follow a restrained Nordic aesthetic, supported by refined engraving, structured layouts and the Three Lions watermark from the national coat of arms, anchoring the series in heraldic identity.
For collectors
For collectors, the kroon represents a complete and closed series defined by both technical discipline and artistic unity. Particular attention is given to the 500 kroon note featuring A. H. Tammsaare, often considered the pinnacle of the series and increasingly difficult to obtain in UNC condition. With a finite supply and strong historical context, the kroon remains one of the most compelling post-Soviet currencies in advanced collections.
In 2011, Estonia adopted the euro (EUR), marking the conclusion of the kroon as a modern national currency.
