The Story of the Maldivian Rufiyaa

Originating from the world's primary source of cowrie shells, the rufiyaa reached a technical peak with the 2015 "Randhihafaheh" Golden Jubilee series. This reform introduced fully polymer, vertical-format banknotes printed by De La Rue. The Thaana script and cowrie shell watermarks reinforce a unique maritime identity, designed for durability in a tourism-driven economy where USD circulates in parallel.

Design & Symbolism

Iconography focuses on atoll life, featuring dhoni vessels and coral ecosystems. The vertical design was a decisive break from tradition, placing the Maldives among a small group of innovative banknote issuers. Technically, the polymer substrate is engineered for resilience against humidity and sand, incorporating transparent windows and metallic security foils into the maritime compositions.

For collectors

For collectors, the rufiyaa offers a clear divide between pre-2015 paper and the modern polymer era. Paper notes from earlier series are increasingly hard to find in UNC condition due to tropical degradation. The 5000 rufiyaa commemorative note is a high-denomination highlight. Cowrie shell motifs provide a symbolic link to ancient commodity money, making the rufiyaa a favourite for thematic and modern design collectors.

The Maldivian rufiyaa remains in circulation, functioning as the primary domestic medium alongside the US dollar.
