The Story of the Zimbabwean ZiG

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe introduced Zimbabwe Gold, abbreviated ZiG on notes and coins, on 5 April 2024 as a new monetary unit replacing the preceding Zimbabwean dollar standard. The initial conversion rate was ZiG1 to ZWL2,498.7242.

The Reserve Bank described ZiG at launch as a structured currency anchored by a composite basket of foreign-currency assets and precious metals, mainly gold. ISO subsequently assigned the currency code ZWG and numeric code 924, effective 25 June 2024, while the domestic currency name remained Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).

The first banknote family was deliberately limited in actual circulation. The 10- and 20-ZiG notes entered use in 2024, while 1-, 2- and 5-ZiG values were issued as coins; other prepared banknote denominations from the original family were not released for normal circulation.

A redesigned Big 5 series began circulating on 7 April 2026. The Reserve Bank launched new 10-, 20- and 50-ZiG notes first, with 100 and 200 ZiG to follow only when conditions warrant. The 2024 10- and 20-ZiG notes continue to co-circulate and are being phased out naturally as they return to the banking system.

Design & Symbolism

The 2024 ZiG banknotes use the Chiremba balancing rocks in Epworth as the principal obverse landmark, accompanied by the Zimbabwe Bird-on-star device and a QR code. Their reverses show molten gold being poured into an ingot mould above stacks of gold bars, making the currency’s name explicit in the visual programme.

The 2026 Big 5 redesign shifts the main identity from a shared gold-production scene to denomination-specific wildlife. The 10-ZiG note features Cape buffalo, the 20 depicts an elephant and the 50 depicts a rhinoceros, while Chiremba balancing rocks and gold-bar motifs remain as continuity elements.

Reverse subjects in the first three 2026 notes are also denomination-specific: balancing rocks in the Matobo Hills on 10 ZiG, the new Parliament complex on 20 ZiG and Kariba Dam on 50 ZiG. The sequence therefore combines wildlife, landscape, government architecture and infrastructure within one coordinated series.

The upgraded notes use graduated sizes and tactile intaglio line patterns for easier identification by visually impaired users. Watermarks combine the Zimbabwe Bird with an electrotype denomination, while the security-thread treatment and optically variable devices become more elaborate as denomination rises.

For collectors

Zimbabwean ZiG should be catalogued separately from the Zimbabwean dollar systems that preceded it. The official ZWG code, April 2024 conversion and different denomination structure define a new currency rather than another redenominated dollar series.

The 2024 banknote type set is smaller than the prepared family suggests: only the 10- and 20-ZiG banknotes are confirmed as regular circulating notes. Prepared 1-, 2-, 5-, 50-, 100- and 200-ZiG designs from that family should not be treated as ordinary circulation issues without issue evidence.

The 2026 Big 5 series creates a second clear collecting phase. The 10-, 20- and 50-ZiG notes entered circulation together on 7 April 2026 and can be separated immediately by animal, size, reverse landmark and denomination-specific security features.

The overlap between the two families is intentional: the Reserve Bank states that the older 10- and 20-ZiG notes continue to co-circulate with the Big 5 series indefinitely and will disappear gradually through normal bank deposits. Collectors should therefore record 2024 and 2026 designs as parallel issue families rather than assuming an immediate demonetization.

Introduced on 5 April 2024 at ZiG 1 = ZWL 2,498.7242; ISO code ZWG and numeric code 924 became effective on 25 June 2024.
