Bank of Mexico
Quick Facts
Institutional Identity
Banco de México functions as one of the most influential central banks in contemporary currency design, overseeing issuance of the peso while setting new standards in visual storytelling, material innovation and security integration. Its banknote strategy is not incremental but programmatic—each series is developed as a coherent national narrative with clearly defined artistic and technical hierarchy.
Historical Evolution
This approach reached its peak with the “Familia G” series, where Mexico established itself as a global leader in modern banknote production. The system deliberately separates substrates: lower denominations (20, 50 and 100 pesos) are produced in advanced polymer, while higher denominations (200, 500 and 1000 pesos) retain paper enhanced with high-security features. This dual-structure model provides both durability and traditional engraving depth, forming a balanced and highly collectible framework.
Design Philosophy
Within this system, individual notes have achieved international recognition. The 50 pesos polymer banknote featuring the axolotl (IBNS Banknote of the Year 2021) and the vertically oriented 100 pesos Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz note (IBNS 2020) define the series’ global impact. Across denominations, designs are anchored in precise national iconography—ecosystems, historical figures and cultural landscapes—executed with scientific clarity, vibrant colour logic and advanced features such as transparent windows and colour-shifting elements.
For collectors
For collectors, Banco de México represents the forefront of modern numismatics, where award-winning design, a clearly structured dual-substrate system and globally iconic motifs converge into one of the most complete and influential contemporary banknote series.
