Central Bank of the Comoros
Quick Facts
Institutional Identity
The Banque Centrale des Comores serves as the issuing authority of the Comorian franc under a formal monetary cooperation agreement signed with France on 23 November 1979, fixing the currency to the euro and guaranteeing convertibility through the French Treasury. This framework creates a system where monetary credibility is externally secured while local issuance remains tightly controlled, positioning the Bank within the structured architecture of the franc zone.
Historical Evolution
Established in 1981 following independence, the institution replaced earlier colonial mechanisms while preserving continuity through Franco-Comorian governance structures. Its operational model includes a dual-signature system—typically the Gouverneur and Vice-Gouverneur—historically reflecting both domestic authority and French oversight, reinforcing institutional discipline and external anchoring within a small-island economy.
Design Philosophy
Banknote production is carried out at the Banque de France high-security facility in Vic-le-Comte, using the same technical standards and substrates applied to euro banknotes. Comorian issues are internationally recognised for their exceptional design quality, most notably the 2006 1000-franc note, awarded IBNS Banknote of the Year. Advanced features include Cornerstones® watermark reinforcement, precision intaglio printing and layered anti-counterfeiting systems adapted for humid tropical conditions. A defining visual signature is the recurring Coelacanth (Latimeria) motif—an ancient fish discovered in Comorian waters—serving as both symbolic anchor and security element across multiple series.
For collectors
For collectors, Comorian banknotes represent a rare convergence of low issuance volumes, French high-security production and award-winning artistic identity. The combination of Vic-le-Comte precision, iconic marine symbolism and internationally recognised design places the Comoros among the most refined and visually distinctive issuers within African and global numismatics.
