Monetary Authority of Macao
Quick Facts
Institutional Identity
The Monetary Authority of Macao acts as the regulatory and issuing authority framework, supervising a dual-banknote system in which both Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) and Bank of China issue legal tender banknotes under unified standards. This structure creates a rare monetary environment where identical denominations circulate simultaneously in two officially recognised design versions.
Historical Evolution
Macau’s currency system reflects a layered historical evolution, combining Portuguese colonial heritage with modern Chinese financial integration. The Macau pataca operates under a peg to the Hong Kong dollar, which circulates widely within the territory, reducing the international presence of local banknotes and naturally increasing their scarcity outside Macau.
Design Philosophy
Design identity is split between the two issuing banks. BNU notes emphasize Portuguese-era architecture and maritime heritage, including landmarks such as the Guia Lighthouse, while Bank of China issues focus on Chinese cultural motifs and contemporary infrastructure. A major modern collecting segment is the Zodiac series introduced in 2012, where both banks release annual 10 pataca notes tied to the Chinese lunar calendar, forming matched pairs across parallel designs.
For collectors
For collectors, Macau represents a structurally unique field defined by its dual-issuer system, where each denomination must be collected in two distinct versions. The combination of parallel design sets, limited external circulation and popular thematic issues such as the Zodiac series makes Macau banknotes one of the most dynamic and system-driven collecting areas in modern numismatics.
