National Bank of Moldova
Quick Facts
Institutional Identity
The National Bank of Moldova manages monetary stability, financial supervision and currency issuance through one of Europe’s most visually consistent national banknote systems, built around a single historic figure and a stable post-independence identity.
Historical Evolution
The leu was introduced in 1993, replacing the temporary coupon system and marking Moldova’s monetary separation from the post-Soviet ruble zone. Rather than repeatedly redesigning its currency, Moldova kept a continuous national format, preserving the same central portrait across all denominations. Even the 1 leu remains a paper banknote, making it one of the last low-value paper notes still circulating in Europe, while the 1000 lei stands as the scarce high-value peak of the series.
Design Philosophy
Moldovan banknotes are defined by the uninterrupted portrait of Ștefan cel Mare on every denomination and by reverse imagery centered on national monuments such as Soroca Fortress and historic monasteries including Căpriana. In 2015, the series received its most important modernization through transparent security elements and enhanced anti-counterfeiting features, while retaining traditional paper structure and the established medieval-architectural identity of the leu.
For collectors
For collectors, Moldova offers a rare numismatic paradox: a series where near-uniformity becomes the main attraction. The single-portrait Ștefan cel Mare concept, the survival of the 1 leu paper note and the discreet but important 2015 security upgrade make Moldovan banknotes a coherent, affordable and deeply characterful field within post-Soviet collecting.
