Grey and muted gold tones turn Azerbaijan’s low denomination into a measured study of music, ornament, and post-redenomination state design.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by traditional Azerbaijani musical instruments, including the tar, kamancha, and daf, set among musical notes and a carpet-pattern background. The word MANAT also functions as a registration device, giving the cultural composition a precise technical role within the note’s security structure.
Reverse
The reverse shifts from music to geography, with a map of Azerbaijan placed against architectural window forms and a smaller map of Europe below. This spatial arrangement connects national territory with a wider continental setting, while the denomination and central bank lettering keep the design within a disciplined institutional frame.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 1 Manat note belongs to Azerbaijan’s 2009-2018 issue, a group that retained the earlier design language of the third manat while carrying the central bank’s updated name. The 2017 P-31b variant, with Elman Rustamov’s signature, F-G prefixes, OeBS production, and the MANAT registration device, marks the later circulation stage of a low-denomination note where music, cartography, European security printing, and post-2006 monetary continuity meet in a compact format.
