Design & Visual Identity

The modern series is anchored by clearly identified national sites. Mount Paektu dominates the composition with its crater lake and sharply cut ridgelines, forming the primary geographic symbol of the state. The Mangyongdae birthplace appears with low traditional architecture, tiled roofs, and carefully arranged vegetation, presented with measured architectural detail rather than decorative framing.

Symbolic motion is introduced through the Chollima statue, depicted in extended forward leap with tension in the limbs and flowing lines, functioning as a fixed ideological emblem across denominations. Human figures are structured and role-defined: scientists in laboratory environments, students in formal attire, and industrial workers positioned within machinery or institutional settings, each engraved with clarity and without individual emphasis.

Specialized issues expand the system. Foreign Exchange Certificates, printed in red and blue variants, form a separate currency branch issued for foreign visitors, distinguished by color coding and inscription while maintaining the same engraving discipline.

Security and ornamental structure remain tightly controlled. Magnolia blossoms are rendered with layered petals and fine line shading, while watermark fields reveal the Juche Tower or floral elements. Dense guilloche networks fill the remaining surface, ensuring uniform visual control across the note.

Historical & Cultural Context

The series is organized through isolation of themes—geography, symbol, and social role—without compositional overlap. Earlier portrait-dominant issues give way to landscape and institutional imagery, but the underlying engraving discipline remains unchanged.

For Collectors

For collectors, North Korea offers a specialized field built around Mount Paektu landscape issues, the Chollima emblem, the distinct red and blue Foreign Exchange Certificates, and detailed magnolia and Juche Tower watermark designs. The closed nature of the system and strict thematic control make North Korean Won banknotes a unique and highly defined area within Asian numismatics.
