Swaziland (eSwatini)

The defining change occurs in 2018, when the kingdom formally adopted the name eSwatini. This transition is directly visible on the banknotes: earlier issues carry the inscription “Central Bank of Swaziland,” while later notes read “Central Bank of Eswatini,” creating a clear and collectible distinction within a largely continuous design framework.

The modern Lilangeni is centered on the portrait of King Mswati III, engraved in deep intaglio that produces a strong tactile surface. Surrounding elements draw from the national coat of arms, where the Lion represents the King and the Elephant represents the Queen Mother, forming a structured visual expression of the dual monarchy.

Reverse compositions focus on cultural continuity. The Incwala ceremony and the Umhlanga (Reed Dance) are depicted with detailed engraving, where repeated figures, traditional attire, and patterned arrangements create rhythm and structure within the scene. These motifs function as cultural anchors rather than decorative elements.

Technical production reflects the standards of Giesecke+Devrient. High-contrast color fields, precise engraving, and advanced LEAD® holographic elements appear on higher denominations, while watermark structures featuring lion and elephant motifs reinforce both identity and security.

Earlier issues featuring King Sobhuza II form a separate historical layer. Their more restrained palette and composition distinguish them as foundational notes of post-independence currency development.

Across all series, the Lilangeni maintains a coherent visual system — a currency where monarchy, ceremony, and controlled design evolution are integrated into a unified structure.
