The most defining transformation in modern Omani numismatics came with the transition following the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. For decades, his portrait defined the visual identity of every banknote. The introduction of the new series under Sultan Haitham bin Tarik marked a historic shift—turning earlier Qaboos-era notes into finite historical artifacts that are now steadily moving from circulation into collections.

One of the most intriguing structural features of the rial is the coexistence of fractional banknotes. The 1/2 rial note—equivalent to 500 baisa—creates a rare dual-denomination logic where identical value is expressed in two different formats. This paradox, often misunderstood by new collectors, has become one of the most distinctive entry points into Omani currency.

Visually, the rial is anchored in Oman’s identity as the historical heart of the frankincense trade. Imagery of Boswellia sacra trees, incense burners and Dhofar landscapes appears alongside forts, ports and architectural landmarks, creating a narrative of wealth rooted not in gold alone, but in scent, trade and cultural continuity.
