Pale green tones and formal ornament give this early Azerbaijani manat note the feeling of a new state reaching back toward older stone, oil, and memory.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse centres the Maiden Tower in Baku, with the skyline of minarets, domes, and oil wells placed behind it. Framed by National Bank of Azerbaijan lettering and a restrained denomination panel, the design joins medieval urban heritage with the petroleum landscape that shaped the country’s modern economic horizon.
Reverse
The reverse is built around an ornate central denomination cartouche, flanked by columns, crescent-and-star motifs, and decorative patterning. Without a figurative scene, the back of the note relies on symmetry, script, and architectural ornament, giving the small paper format a ceremonial rather than narrative character.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 10 Manat note belongs to Azerbaijan’s first years of post-Soviet monetary independence, when the second manat circulated before its demonetization on 31 December 2006. Its undated, unsigned format, fractional A/1 prefix, Banque de France production, and use of Baku’s Maiden Tower place it firmly within the short but important monetary era in which the new republic established its own currency through inherited architecture, oil-era symbolism, and Western banknote printing.
