A final blue-green breath of the Finnish markka, this banknote carries literature, industry and memory at the threshold before the euro era.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse presents Finnish author Väinö Linna, one of the most important literary voices of modern Finland, whose works gave language to war, rural hardship and social transformation. His portrait is placed against a cool blue-green composition with Finnish and Swedish inscriptions, tactile raised circles above the bank name, and the final words of his novel Tuntematon sotilas, The Unknown Soldier. The rectangular holographic patch at the upper right, with birds in flight, gives the note a late-era security character, while the added Litt. A at the lower left identifies this final modified issue.
Reverse
The reverse turns from the writer to the working city, showing the Tammerkoski river in Tampere, with industrial buildings rising along both banks and iron railings in the foreground. The view is not merely architectural: it reflects the Finland of mills, waterpower, labour and urban development, a landscape closely connected with the social world that Linna’s writing helped to reveal. The Finnish coat of arms and bilingual inscriptions complete the design with a quiet sense of national continuity.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 20 Markkaa note is especially meaningful as the last markka banknote type issued before Finland’s transition to the euro. Its combination of Väinö Linna’s literary portrait, Tampere’s industrial river scenery and late security additions makes it a compact farewell to Finland’s national currency. The Litt. A marking and holographic patch distinguish this final version from the preceding issue, giving it both technical clarity and symbolic weight within a modern European collection.
