Purple ship-series engraving sets a tongkang against the Chingay procession, joining Singapore’s maritime past with the public theatre of its multicultural streets.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is centred on a tongkang sailing vessel with smaller boats, the sun over the sea, seagull birds and the Singapore coat of arms in the upper left. As part of the Ship Series, the vessel recalls Singapore’s older harbour economy, while the change to a purple colour scheme helped distinguish this denomination more clearly from the 10 Dollar note.
Reverse
The reverse moves from harbour to festival, showing the Chingay procession with a dragon, different ethnic groups, and Vanda Miss Joaquim orchids at the lower left. This side gives the note a civic and cultural dimension, presenting Singapore not only as a port, but as a city where public celebration and multicultural identity became part of the national story.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 2 Dollars note belongs to Singapore’s purple Ship Series revision, introduced after the earlier red 2 Dollar colour was considered too close to the 10 Dollar note. The 1998 P-37 variety is linked to British American Bank Note Company printing, the EA-LG prefix range and the Richard Hu Tsu Tau signature. Its solid security thread, lion head watermark and colour-change context make it a distinct late variant within the long-running Ship Series.
