Gambia 5 Dalasis 2015, P-31, UNC

Warm crimson tones and layered wildlife imagery transform this banknote into a vivid reflection of The Gambia’s landscapes, fauna, and political chapter of the mid-2010s.

Design & Symbolism

Obverse

The obverse brings together a striking composition where a giant kingfisher dominates the foreground while President Yahya Jammeh appears at the right side of the design. Beneath the principal imagery, monkeys, trees, and a sailing boat emerge within subtle underprints, creating a textured scene where wildlife, waterways, and state authority intersect. Geometric security elements and ornamental patterns reinforce the note’s richly layered visual structure.

Reverse

The reverse presents cattle standing among open fields framed by palm trees and rural scenery. Agricultural motifs create a quieter visual rhythm, shifting attention toward pastoral life and everyday landscapes that shaped The Gambia’s economic environment. The iridescent security strip introduces an additional modern visual element while preserving the composition’s natural atmosphere.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, this issue occupies a distinctive place within Gambian monetary history as one of the final banknote families associated with President Yahya Jammeh before later political transitions reshaped the nation’s currency narrative. Its combination of political portraiture, wildlife imagery, and rural symbolism creates a compelling intersection between state power and national landscape traditions.
