Red and violet engraving raises Somaliland’s institutional and port-economy imagery into the 1,000 Shillings denomination.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is centred on the main Bank of Somaliland building in Hargeysa, framed by Arabic, English and Somali text, trees, camels and ornamental denomination panels. The composition gives the higher denomination a formal civic presence, placing the issuing bank and the capital at the centre of Somaliland’s monetary image.
Reverse
The reverse shows Berbera dockside with herdsmen, Somali sheep and goats, a ship and trucks. This scene connects the shilling to livestock movement, coastal trade and the port infrastructure that links Somaliland’s inland economy with maritime exchange.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 1,000 Shillings note belongs to Somaliland’s 2011-2016 circulation issue, a higher-denomination continuation of the Bank of Somaliland and Berbera dockside design family. The 2014 P-20c variety is associated with the Abdi Dirir Abdi and Unknown signature combination, while the windowed security thread with demetalized BOS 1000 provides a clear authentication feature absent from the simplest early Somaliland notes. Its collector value lies in the way it combines institutional authority, Berbera’s trade economy and a later higher-value stage of the Somaliland shilling.
