The Story of the Chinese Fen
The Fen belongs to the iconic Second Series of the Renminbi, introduced in the 1950s as China consolidated its unified monetary system under the People’s Bank of China. Rooted in earlier traditions of granular exchange, the Fen ensured pricing precision in a centrally planned economy shaped by rationing, agriculture and early industrialization. These notes circulated widely across rural markets and state distribution networks. As China’s economy expanded and coin production improved, the practical role of Fen banknotes diminished, and they were gradually withdrawn from everyday use, remaining as a structural subdivision of the Yuan.
Design & Symbolism
The visual identity of Chinese Fen banknotes is defined by precise industrial symbolism. Each denomination presents a specific vehicle of progress: the 1 Fen depicts a Ural ZIS-150 truck, the 2 Fen features a Lisunov Li-2 aircraft, and the 5 Fen shows the Hai Liao steamship. These images form a cohesive narrative of transport, logistics and national development during the early People’s Republic. Produced using fine intaglio and offset techniques, the notes exhibit disciplined symmetry, restrained color palettes and functional clarity, embodying the utilitarian aesthetic of mid-20th-century socialist design.
For collectors
For collectors, Chinese Fen notes are defined by one critical distinction: the difference between the original “Long Number” issues and the later “Short Number” reprints. The original 1950s banknotes, printed with full Arabic serial numbers, are scarce and highly valued in high-grade condition. In contrast, the massive reissues of the 1980s—produced without standard serial numbers and marked only by Roman numeral codes—are extremely common and inexpensive. This visual distinction is essential, as two identical-looking notes can differ dramatically in value, making Fen banknotes a precise and knowledge-driven field within Chinese numismatics.
As the smallest unit, the fen represents the foundational layer of China’s structured monetary system.
