The Bank of Finland (Suomen Pankki), founded in 1811 and recognised as one of the oldest central banks in the world, served as the issuer of the Finnish markka (FIM) and the primary authority for monetary stability and currency design. Its institutional role evolved from operating under the Russian Empire to managing a fully sovereign monetary system after 1917 independence, before integrating into the Eurosystem following euro adoption in 1999/2002.

The Bank’s monetary history includes highly distinctive issuance phases, most notably the 1918 Civil War emergency issues (Vaasa issues), alongside provisional overprints on earlier notes during periods of instability.
