The Bank of the Republic of Burundi serves as the sole issuing authority of the Burundian franc, established following the 1964 dissolution of the Ruanda-Urundi monetary union, which required a full institutional and currency separation from Rwanda. This transition marked a decisive break from the former Banque d'Emission du Rwanda et du Burundi and laid the foundation for an independent monetary system under constrained economic conditions.
