Institutional Identity

The Qatar Central Bank serves as the nation’s central monetary authority, overseeing currency issuance, monetary stability and financial supervision while anchoring one of the Gulf region’s most rapidly evolving banknote systems.

Historical Evolution

Established after the dissolution of the Qatar–Dubai Currency Board in 1973, the Bank introduced the Qatari riyal as a symbol of full monetary sovereignty. The earlier Qatar–Dubai issues (1966–1973) remain among the rarest and most sought-after banknotes in the region, forming a critical historical foundation for Qatar’s independent currency identity.

Design Philosophy

Qatari banknotes are distinguished by their refined geometric composition, deep colour layering and advanced security technologies, produced by leading printers such as De La Rue. The 5th series, introduced in 2020, marked a decisive design evolution with the introduction of vertical reverse layouts, enhanced holographic elements and SPARK Live colour-shifting features. Iconography includes falcons symbolising national pride, traditional dhow vessels reflecting maritime heritage and modern architectural landmarks such as the Museum of Islamic Art—creating a dialogue between tradition and rapid development.

For collectors

For collectors, Qatari riyal banknotes offer a dynamic contrast between the rare Qatar–Dubai joint issues and the highly sophisticated modern series. The introduction of the first-ever 200 riyal denomination in 2020 adds a new layer to the collecting structure, while high-denomination notes featuring falconry and architectural themes are especially valued for their technical precision and strong representation of Gulf prestige.
