Design & Visual Identity
The structure of Gambian banknotes is built around two primary historical phases. Early post-independence issues are closely associated with Sir Dawda Jawara, establishing the first stable visual identity of the dalasi. Later series linked to the Yahya Jammeh period introduce a distinct shift in design, creating a second identifiable segment within the currency system tied to political transformation.
Beyond portraiture, the series is anchored in specific cultural and geographic references. The Kachikally Sacred Crocodile of Bakau stands out as one of the most unusual motifs in African numismatics, directly linking currency to local spiritual tradition. The Wassu Stone Circles introduce a prehistoric dimension, while agricultural scenes—groundnut harvesting and baobab trees—reflect the country’s economic base. These elements are rendered with consistent engraving, supported by watermark portraits, security threads, and structured layouts.
Historical & Cultural Context
Urban and political identity is reinforced through Banjul landmarks, most notably Arch 22, which appears on modern issues as a central symbol of state authority and late 20th-century political history.
Across successive series, the dalasi maintains a controlled thematic framework combining leadership eras, sacred heritage, and agricultural production, creating continuity despite shifts in political representation.
For Collectors
For collectors, Gambia offers a clearly defined collecting field built on the distinction between Jawara-era and Jammeh-era banknotes. The presence of the Kachikally Sacred Crocodile, Wassu Stone Circles, and recurring groundnut agriculture motifs creates strong thematic anchors, while Arch 22 provides a modern political reference point. This combination positions Gambian banknotes as a focused and recognizable niche within West African numismatics.
