Obverse

The obverse places Togolok Moldo at the left, his portrait set beside the denomination, national emblem, and a qomuz motif within a red ornamental field. A windowed security thread and pale watermark area structure the composition vertically, while the revised layout gives the portrait a cleaner, more contemporary position. The design links literary authority with the oral and musical traditions that shaped Kyrgyz cultural memory.

Reverse

The reverse opens toward Tash-Rabat, the historic caravanserai set against the Tian Shan mountains in a restrained red landscape. The architecture appears within a broad central panel, framed by denomination elements, fine background patterning, and the issue date at the lower right. The scene shifts from the poet’s cultural voice to the older routes of mountain travel, placing Kyrgyz heritage within the geography of the Silk Road.

Collector’s Insight

For collectors, the 2016 20 som issue belongs to Kyrgyzstan’s fourth issue revision, retaining the established Togolok Moldo design while updating the portrait placement, date treatment, signature, and security configuration. The Abdygulov signature and Oberthur Fiduciaire printing separate this later issue from the earlier De La Rue-produced state of the type. It is a production-transfer variety within the modern som series, important for tracing the technical evolution of Kyrgyzstan’s circulating paper currency.
