Orange, rose, and pale brown tones compress the broader design into a warmer modern field, where portrait, ornament, and security space feel tightly controlled.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by Kurmanjan Datka’s portrait at the left, set beside a tower element from the Uzgen complex, national ornament, and a windowed security thread. Large denomination figures frame the field, while the pale watermark area and serial numbering give the layout a more technical rhythm. Compared with the earlier large-format version, the portrait is brought closer to the edge, making the historical figure more immediate within the revised composition.
Reverse
The reverse presents the Uzgen architectural complex against a mountain landscape, with the mausoleum and minaret softened into an orange-brown tonal field. The composition is flatter and more compact than the earlier issue, using denomination panels, pale security space, and fine background patterning to contain the monument within a stricter modern layout. The design keeps the Silk Road architectural theme but translates it into the smaller format of the later som revision.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 2016 50 som issue is the fourth-issue revision of Kyrgyzstan’s Kurmanjan Datka denomination, retaining the Uzgen subject while changing the production setting, format, signature, and security treatment. The Abdygulov signature and Oberthur Fiduciaire printing separate it from the earlier De La Rue state of the design. Within the revised French-printed group, this note preserves the series’ most prominent female political portrait in a tighter, more technical iconographic form.
