Olive green and violet tones give Burundi’s 5,000 Francs note a formal state character, balancing parliamentary authority with the machinery of trade.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by the Parliament House in Bujumbura, with the coat of arms of Burundi above and bilingual French and Kirundi text framing the institutional scene. A holographic cattle head patch and security elements give the composition a technical density, placing state architecture within a protected monetary surface.
Reverse
The reverse shifts from government space to the Port of Bujumbura, where ships, cranes, and dockside structures create a scene of movement and economic handling. The composition links public authority with transport infrastructure, allowing the denomination to move from legislation to commerce within the same national framework.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 5,000 Francs note is the 2013 P-48c signature variety within Burundi’s 2008 series, carrying the Melchior Wagara / Jean Gaspard Ciza combination before the issue was demonetized on 29 August 2015. Its De La Rue production, cattle watermark, holographic cattle-head patch, and windowed security thread with demetalized BRB give the note a precise place among Burundi’s late pre-withdrawal high-denomination franc issues.
