A palm-framed Pacific shore meets the old pound language of Western Samoa, turning this reprinted note into a quiet echo of a former monetary age.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse brings together English and Samoan text, a machete, a kava bowl, the Western Samoan flag, and the national coat of arms within a dense ornamental frame. The composition places ceremonial and national elements beside the denomination, while the brown, red, yellow, and blue palette gives the design the layered character of mid-century Commonwealth-era engraving.
Reverse
The reverse opens into a coastal Samoan landscape, with palm trees, ocean, distant mountains, and cocoa trees arranged as a broad island panorama. Unlike the emblematic density of the obverse, this side gives the note a wider sense of place, connecting the former pound currency to cultivated land, sea routes, and the natural setting of Samoa.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 5 Pounds note is especially interesting as the 2020 modern reprint of an earlier Western Samoa pound design. The Prefix S is the key identifier separating it from the original no-prefix issue, while the re-engraved plates and De La Rue production give the note a distinct collecting position from the earlier Bradbury Wilkinson printing. It belongs to the small group of modern reprints that preserve historic currency design while clearly forming a later collector-recognised variant.
