A familiar Samoan shoreline returns on polymer, with the teuila flower adding a newer tactile presence to the modern 5 Tala design.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse keeps the sandy beach motif from the earlier paper issue, now placed within brighter polymer colour fields and a clear window carrying the teuila flower. The coastal scene continues to link the denomination with Samoa’s visitor economy, while the Safeguard substrate gives the design a cleaner, more contemporary security character.
Reverse
Villa Vailima, the former residence of Robert Louis Stevenson and now a museum, anchors the reverse beside the coat of arms of Samoa and another teuila flower window element. The design connects the 5 Tala not only with landscape and tourism, but also with Samoa’s literary memory through Stevenson’s final years at Vailima.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 5 Tala note belongs to Samoa’s 2023-2024 polymer update of the preceding paper family, retaining the same core imagery while shifting the denomination onto De La Rue Safeguard polymer. The AA prefix identifies the 5 tala value within this polymer series, while the clear teuila flower window, UV activity and new Lautimuia Uelese Va’ai and Maiava Atalina Emma Ainuu-Enari signature combination help distinguish it from the earlier paper issue.
