Purple and black tones give this Dominican 50 Pesos note the gravity of sacred architecture, national devotion, and late-series security revision.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse brings together the Catedral Primada de América, also known as Catedral Santa María la Menor in Santo Domingo, with Rose of Bayahibe flowers, the bank seal, and the newer BCRD bank logo at the upper right. The composition places the first cathedral built in the Americas within a formal monetary frame, combining colonial religious heritage with the updated visual language of the Central Bank.
Reverse
The reverse is centred on the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in Salvaleón de Higüey, rising within a restrained purple field and surrounded by denomination panels and Spanish text. The design turns from the historic cathedral of Santo Domingo to a modern national pilgrimage basilica, linking two religious landmarks across the note’s two sides.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 50 Pesos Dominicanos note is the 2024 variant of the 2017-2024 issue with the Héctor Valdez Albizu / José Manuel Vicente Dubocq signature combination and Casa de Moneda de Chile production. Its added BCRD logo at the upper right front, ClearText solid security thread with demetalized BCRD 50, absence of watermark, and catalogue tension with the earlier P-189 type give the note a precise technical place within the late Dominican paper peso series.
