Blue-violet engraving cools the horizontal field into a cleaner, sharper surface, where pale security light and dense ornament create a more modern tension.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse places Bübüsara Beyshenalieva in a right-facing portrait beside a large ornamental security field and the central denomination device. The open left margin carries the bank name, signature, and serial number, while the patterned border on the right compresses the composition into a stricter vertical edge. Compared with the earlier design, the portrait is more integrated into the note’s security architecture, giving the cultural subject a more contemporary monetary setting.
Reverse
The reverse returns to the Kyrgyz State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, now framed within a cooler blue architectural composition and dated at the lower right. The theatre remains central, but the surrounding guilloche fields, vertical ornament, and modernized layout make the image feel more technical and controlled. The design preserves the ballet theme while shifting the note from cultural portraiture toward a more security-conscious issue style.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1997 5 som issue is the revised form of Kyrgyzstan’s ballet-themed denomination, retaining Beyshenalieva and the national theatre while introducing a dated layout, Sultanov signature, portrait watermark, and windowed thread. Unlike the 1994 version, this note belongs to the technical revision stage of the early som series. It records the Kyrgyz Bank’s move from inaugural portrait notes toward a more controlled late-1990s production standard.
