Cool blue and green tones carry Lesotho’s royal portrait line toward a quieter scene of Basotho vernacular architecture.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse gathers King Moshoeshoe II, King Letsie III and King Moshoeshoe I within a light blue, violet and green security field. The Basotho hat mokorotlo appears as both registration device and OVI element, while the coat of arms and tactile marks give the design a formal national frame. The composition keeps the same royal structure as the lower denomination, but its cooler palette creates a more restrained visual register.
Reverse
The reverse opens onto thatch-roofed round houses set beneath a mountain-like landscape panel and framed by pale security space. The houses give the note a domestic and cultural dimension, moving from monarchy on the obverse to the built forms of Basotho life. Sotho text, denomination marks and the repeated mokorotlo tie the rural architecture back to the wider language of the loti series.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 20 Maloti note belongs to Lesotho’s 2021 security-upgraded family, introduced with tactile elements for the sight impaired, improved anti-counterfeit features and SICPA PROTECT varnish. The B228a 2021 variety is distinguished by the Matlanyane second signature, BN-CJ prefix range, windowed demetalized CBL 20 thread and King Moshoeshoe I watermark, making it a precise modern type for collectors of African paper currency and Basotho cultural themes.
