Blue, brown and purple engraving carries Qatar’s dhow emblem into a later 1 Riyal variant with tactile marks and native birds.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is built around the Qatari coat of arms, where a dhow, palm trees and crossed swords sit within a pale field of arches, ornamental columns and multicoloured security patterning. Arabic text and repeated denomination marks give the note a formal central bank structure, while the tactile marks along the left edge identify it as the revised type made to assist the sight impaired.
Reverse
The reverse opens onto three native birds - a crested lark, Eurasian bee-eater and lesser sand plover - arranged on a branch against a blue, green and purple security field. After the heraldic and maritime language of the obverse, the reverse turns toward Qatar’s natural environment, giving the small denomination a quieter ecological register. English text and the One Riyal denomination keep the layout clear and restrained.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 1 Riyal note belongs to Qatar’s 2008-2015 paper issues, when tactile symbols were added along the left front edge to assist the sight impaired. With the Al-Thani and Al Emadi signature combination and De La Rue production, it represents a later signature variety within the tactile-marked 1 Riyal type. The falcon head watermark with electrotype 1 and demetalized QCB 1 security thread preserve the security language of the series, while its demonetization in 2021 gives the note a defined historical boundary beside the earlier 2008 signature issue.
