Blue and brown engraving sets Goodirka and the camel road into a larger 50 Shillings format, giving Somaliland’s early currency a broader civic and pastoral frame.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is centred on Goodirka in Hargeysa, the former House of Representatives and later Supreme Court building, with a male greater kudu placed to the right. Arabic, English and Somali text frame the composition, while the larger note size gives the institutional image more space than the earlier small-format issue.
Reverse
The reverse shows two nomads with three camels before the twin hills of Naasa-Hablood near Hargeysa, with a tree closing the dryland scene. The image links the denomination to pastoral movement, local geography and the routes through which livestock, trade and settlement shaped Somaliland’s inland economy.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 50 Shillings note belongs to Somaliland’s 1996-2002 large type issue, a larger-format continuation of the earlier 1994 design. The 2002 P-7d variety is associated with the Abdirahman Dualle Mahmoud and Abdi Mohamoud Gullet signature combination and the CH-CJ prefix range, while the absence of security thread and watermark reflects the simple technical profile of Somaliland’s early shilling notes. Its collector value lies in the way it preserves the first currency reform imagery while marking a later, larger-format stage of the denomination.
