Blue, purple and green security design places Toegye Yi Hwang beside Korean learning, scholarship and a landscape painted in the classical tradition.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by the portrait of Toegye Yi Hwang in traditional Korean dress, with Myeongnyundang lecture hall, mume blossoms and the t’aeguk registration device arranged around the central denomination. The composition gives the 1,000 Won a scholarly character, connecting the modern Bank of Korea note with Confucian education and the architecture of learning.
Reverse
The reverse presents Gyesangjeonggeodo, a landscape painting associated with Yi Hwang at Dosan Seowon, with mountains, water, trees and a boat rendered in restrained blue tones. This side turns the note from portrait to intellectual setting, placing the scholar within the landscape of study, retreat and Korean artistic memory.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 1,000 Won note belongs to South Korea’s 2006-2009 improved security issue, which introduced Western prefix and suffix serial numbering and stronger security features. The note is unsigned and printed by KOMSCO, with a windowed security thread, Omron rings, Toegye Yi Hwang watermark and electrotype 1000 providing clear authentication points. Its collector value lies in the balance between modern security design and a deeply Korean scholarly theme centred on Yi Hwang and Confucian learning.
