Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is built around athletes from winter sports, including speed skating, biathlon, ice hockey, curling, ski jumping, luge and bobsled, with the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic logo, Gangwon Province mountain range and snowflake hologram worked into the design. The note presents the Games through motion and winter atmosphere, giving Korea’s first Olympic commemorative banknote a clear sporting focus.
Reverse
The vertical reverse features a tiger and pine tree from Kim Hong-do’s painting Songhamaenghodo, chosen in part because the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic mascot, Soohorang, is also a tiger. This side gives the commemorative issue a cultural depth beyond sport, linking the Winter Games to Korean artistic tradition and the symbolic force of the tiger.
