Brown and ochre security engraving places Dr. John Garang de Mabior beside the 20 Pounds denomination, a dated note from South Sudan’s early currency development.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by the portrait of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, with a Dinka warrior spear, Bank of South Sudan text, geometric border work and the year printed at the lower right. The design keeps Garang as the founding figure of the note family, while the brown colour scheme marks the denomination introduced to replace the earlier 25 Pounds note.
Reverse
The reverse shows antelope beside an oil derrick or mine shaft, set within a pale brown security field and framed by the Bank of South Sudan name and 20 Pounds denomination. This image connects the note to natural resources and national wealth, presenting the country’s economy through both extractive industry and wildlife.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 20 Pounds note belongs to South Sudan’s 2015 dated issue and represents the denomination introduced in place of the earlier 25 Pounds note of the same brown colour family. The 2015 P-13a variety is distinguished by the Kornelio Koriom Mayiek and David Deng Athorbei signature combination, the AA-AE prefix range and the printed year on the front. Withdrawn on 3 August 2022, it also carries a wider gold-to-green windowed security thread with demetalized BSS 20, plus a John Garang watermark with electrotype 20 and cornerstones.
