Purple and maroon security engraving gives the 50 Pounds a solemn weight, placing Dr. John Garang de Mabior opposite a quiet elephant scene.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by the portrait of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, with a Dinka warrior spear, Bank of South Sudan text, geometric borders and the 2015 dated layout carried into this later variety. The composition keeps Garang as the central founding figure of the note family, while the darker purple palette gives the denomination a more formal presence.
Reverse
The reverse shows four elephants of varying sizes on grassland, set within a pale multicolour field and framed by the Bank of South Sudan name and 50 Pounds denomination. The scene gives the note a wildlife and natural-wealth dimension, balancing the political portrait on the front with one of the country’s most recognisable animal motifs.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 50 Pounds note belongs to South Sudan’s dated 2015-2019 issue and represents the 2019 P-14d variety. It is distinguished by the Dier Tong Ngor and Salvatore Garang Mabiordit signature combination, the AT-BC prefix range and the printed year on the front. Withdrawn on 3 August 2022, it also carries a windowed security thread with demetalized BSS 50, plus a John Garang watermark with electrotype 50 and cornerstones, giving the note clear technical markers within South Sudan’s early pound series.
