Maroon and rose security engraving places Dr. John Garang de Mabior beside the 2015 dated South Sudanese pound, carrying the young currency into its next circulation phase.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by the portrait of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, with a Dinka warrior spear, Bank of South Sudan text, geometric security patterns and the year printed above the denomination at the lower right. The design keeps Garang as the central founding figure while the dated layout separates this issue from the earlier undated 2011 type.
Reverse
The reverse shows Sanga Juba cattle of the Dinka people at the right, set against a pale multicolour field with the Bank of South Sudan name and 5 Pound denomination. The cattle motif points to cultural wealth, pastoral economy and social value, giving the note a grounded national image beyond its formal monetary function.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 5 Pounds note belongs to South Sudan’s 2015 dated issue, following the earlier 2011 first South Sudanese pound notes. The 2015 P-11 variety is distinguished by the Kornelio Koriom Mayiek and David Deng Athorbei signature combination, the AL-AR prefix range and the printed year on the front. Withdrawn on 3 August 2022, it also carries a windowed security thread with demetalized BANK OF SOUTH SUDAN 5, a John Garang watermark with electrotype 5 and cornerstones, and a reverse iridescent stripe repeating the denomination.
