The Story of the Macau Pataca

Introduced in 1905, the pataca’s history is defined by its dual-issuer framework. Both the Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) and the Bank of China issue their own designs for the same denominations. This parallel system continued after the 1999 handover to China, creating a dual visual narrative that coexists within the same monetary unit under the supervision of the Monetary Authority of Macao.

Design & Symbolism

Design themes are split between Portuguese heritage and Chinese culture. BNU notes feature landmarks like St. Paul’s Ruins, while Bank of China issues focus on the lotus emblem. Modern highlights include the annual Lunar New Year “Zodiac” series. Printed by Hong Kong Note Printing Limited, the notes meet elite standards of intaglio depth and advanced security features shared with the Hong Kong dollar.

For collectors

For collectors, the pataca offers the challenge of “dual-spectrum” sets. Collecting both issuers for every denomination is the standard goal. High demand exists for pre-1999 Portuguese-era notes, complete Zodiac sets, and notes with “lucky” serial numbers (especially 8). The currency stands as a refined intersection of European engraving tradition and East Asian symbolic precision.

The Macau pataca remains in circulation as the official currency of Macau, defined by its unique dual-bank issuance.
