Dark blue engraving opens into a pale field of measured geometry, giving the note a disciplined scholarly stillness.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse centers on Abu Nasr al-Farabi in a turban, set beside Kazakh inscriptions, the one tenge denomination, and a compact field of ornamental security engraving. The composition gives the scholar a calm intellectual presence, using portraiture and restrained color to place learning at the center of Kazakhstan’s first tenge design language.
Reverse
The reverse presents al-Farabi’s geometrical constructions and formulations, arranged across a pale patterned field with the denomination and decorative national elements at the right. The design shifts from portrait to thought, translating scholarship into line, proportion, and mathematical structure.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1993 1 tenge issue belongs to Kazakhstan’s first national currency series, released at the moment when the tenge replaced the post-Soviet ruble system. As an opening full-tenge denomination, it stands near the foundation of Kazakhstan’s independent circulation and gives the new currency a scholarly rather than purely political visual language.
