Green and brown engraving places Somaliland’s first shilling issue between Goodirka, desert wildlife and the caravan road beyond Hargeysa.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is centred on Goodirka, the former House of Representatives and later Supreme Court building, framed by Arabic, English and Somali text. A male greater kudu stands to the right, giving the small denomination a regional natural presence, while the institutional building anchors the note in the early civic language of Somaliland’s new currency.
Reverse
The reverse shows two nomads with three camels near the twin hills of Naasa-Hablood outside Hargeysa, with a tree completing the dryland scene. The image turns the note toward mobility, pastoral life and the landscape around the capital, linking the new shilling to everyday routes of trade, livestock and settlement.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 5 Shillings note belongs to Somaliland’s first 1994 circulation issue, introduced when the Somaliland shilling replaced the Somali shilling at a rate of 100 to 1. The Hargeysa date, AA-AH prefix range, six-digit serial format, and Barre Haji Omer and Abdi Mohamoud Gullet signature combination place it at the beginning of Somaliland’s independent monetary history. Its importance lies in that first currency transition, where a modest low denomination carries the practical and political weight of a new issuing authority.
