Red and violet tones give the 1000 Pounds a solemn presence, carrying South Sudan’s founding portrait into the highest denomination of the 2024 South Sudan Pounds issue.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by the portrait of Dr. John Garang de Mabior, accompanied by the Dinka warrior spear, large 1000 numerals, Bank of South Sudan text and the 2024 date at the lower right. The note follows the established South Sudan design language while replacing the earlier South Sudanese Pounds wording with South Sudan Pounds, a small textual change that marks a new stage in the currency’s identity.
Reverse
The reverse presents two ostriches standing against a broad landscape field, framed by the large denomination and layered guilloche structure. Their presence gives the note a quieter natural symbolism than the lower denominations, linking the high value to South Sudan’s open terrain and living fauna rather than to urban or industrial imagery.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 1000 Pounds note belongs to South Sudan’s 2024 South Sudan Pounds issue and is distinguished by the James Alic Garang and Dhieu Mathok Ding Wol signature combination, the CG-CW prefix range and the revised denomination wording. Its holographic windowed security thread with demetalized BSS 1000, John Garang watermark with electrotype 1000 and cornerstones, and large 158 x 82 mm format make it a significant high-denomination type within South Sudan’s modern paper currency sequence.
