Religious architecture and national monument structured in formal balance.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is organised around a central ornamental panel in multicolour underprint, framed by deep brown and red-violet engraved borders. At the top centre, the state emblem of Da Afghanistan Bank establishes institutional authority within a symmetrical framework.
To the right, a detailed vignette presents the Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, also known as the Shrine of Hazrat Ali. The domes and façade are rendered in fine linear engraving, accompanied by birds in flight that introduce measured movement to the otherwise architectural composition. The denomination “1000” appears at lower right within an integrated cartouche. Calligraphic script occupies the central field, layered over pastel geometric motifs that stabilise the layout.
Reverse
The reverse features two monumental elements arranged along a landscaped axis. At left stands a memorial structure dedicated to fallen Afghan soldiers of the Wars of Independence. In the distance at right appears the Arch of Victory (Taq-e Zafar) in Paghman Gardens near Kabul.
Both monuments are engraved in controlled brown linework against a subdued landscape background. Large rosette ornaments flank the composition on either side, reinforcing bilateral symmetry. “Da Afghanistan Bank” is positioned prominently across the upper register, while the denomination is repeated at lower right within a structured ornamental frame.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, the 1000 Afghanis of 1991 represents the highest regular denomination within the later phase of the SH 1358–1370 series. Compared to earlier 1979 printings, this issue reflects both continuity of design and subtle production adjustments, reflecting subtle production adjustments across subtypes.
The combination of a major religious site on the obverse and national memorial architecture on the reverse gives the note a dual thematic weight within Afghanistan’s circulating currency of the period. Printed by Goznak, the engraving displays disciplined line structure and stable colour layering, particularly evident in UNC condition where the pastel underprint remains crisp and the brown intaglio retains full contrast.
Within a structured Afghanistan collection, P-61c provides logical progression from earlier signature varieties and offers a clear representation of early 1990s monetary production before subsequent political and currency transitions.
