Red polymer tones give Costa Rica’s 1,000 Colones note a compact study of political memory, dry forest ecology, and modern accessible banknote design.
Design & Symbolism
Obverse
The obverse is anchored by Braulio Carrillo Colina, set beside the original Estado de Costa Rica shield and a map of Costa Rica placed within a see-through leaf feature. The composition links nineteenth-century state formation with polymer security design, while embossed dots above the watermark area add an accessibility element for sight-impaired users.
Reverse
The reverse turns toward the dry forest of Guanacaste, with pitahaya cactus flowers, a tree, a white-tailed deer, and scorpions forming a carefully observed ecological scene. Based on original drawings by Fernando Zeledón, the design gives the denomination a natural-history character, placing Costa Rican biodiversity within the everyday language of circulation money.
Collector’s Insight
For collectors, this 1,000 Colones note is the 2009 P-274a Series A variety, with the Francisco de Paula Gutiérrez Gutiérrez / Roy González Rojas signature combination and a 40,000,000-note printed range. Its Oberthur Fiduciaire production, polymer substrate, simulated security thread, leaves watermark, accessibility dots, and 1 November 2025 withdrawal date give the note a precise technical place within Costa Rica’s 2009-2015 redesigned colón series.
